New Zealand land use map
Organisations can use the LUCAS New Zealand Land Use Map to monitor changes in their own land management practices.
The latest version of the LUCAS New Zealand Land Use Map (LUM) is available free for streaming or downloading with Creative Commons Attribution licensing. It is available in a variety of GIS formats.
New Zealand (including Stewart Island)

The LUM includes 12 land-use classes and five maps nominally dated at 31 December 1989, 2007, 2012, 2016, and 2020.
To display the:
- 2020 map, symbolise the LUCID_2020 field
- 2016 map, symbolise the LUCID_2016 field
- 2012 map, symbolise the LUCID_2012 field
- 2007 map, symbolise the LUCID_2007 field
- 1989 map, symbolise the LUCID_1989 field.
The LUCAS Land Use Map is produced to keep track of land-use change, especially change in forests. The following are useful guides for understanding the LUM in detail. It is strongly recommended that the Land-use and Carbon Analysis System: Satellite imagery interpretation guide for land-use classes: 2nd edition publication is referred to when assessing the appropriateness of using the LUM for other purposes.
