The Government has appointed a Ministerial advisory panel to review New Zealand’s biogenic methane science and 2050 target.
The Ministerial advisory panel are tasked with reviewing the latest science about biogenic methane to provide an up-to-date evidence base about methane’s warming impact.
The panel will also provide advice on what a biogenic methane target consistent with the principle of no additional warming would look like for New Zealand.
The panel will report back to the Government by the end of 2024.
The panel members bring extensive New Zealand and international scientific experience across atmospheric physics and chemistry, understanding and quantifying greenhouse gas emissions, and climate modelling. The members are:
Interested parties, including iwi/Māori, can submit relevant evidence to the panel for their consideration by emailing MethanePanelSecretariat@mfe.govt.nz. Submissions close 5pm Tuesday 15th October.
