National Policy Statement for Indigenous Biodiversity: Information for urban developers

The National Policy Statement for Indigenous Biodiversity (NPSIB) is an essential part of our response to biodiversity decline in Aotearoa. The NPSIB provides direction to councils on how to identify, maintain and protect our indigenous biodiversity.

The NPSIB works alongside the National Policy Statement on Urban Development 2020 (NPS-UD) to support the development of well-functioning ,healthy urban environments. The NPSIB includes policies that promote a certain amount of indigenous vegetation cover in urban environments.

This information sheet provides a quick overview of the implications of the NPSIB provisions for existing and new development and uses in urban areas that may affect native plants and animals. It should be read alongside the general summary and the NPSIB.
